In the heart of India, nestled amidst the vibrant state of Gujarat, lies a city that glitters like no other. Surat, often referred to as the ‘Diamond City,’ is a treasure trove of these dazzling gems. But how do these diamonds, hidden deep within the Earth, go from rough, unremarkable stones to the radiant symbols of elegance we adore? Join us on a mesmerizing journey as we delve into the remarkable transformation of a diamond, a journey that takes us from Surat, the Diamond City, to the world.
The Historical Legacy of Diamonds
Throughout history, diamonds have been celebrated for their purity, durability, and unmatched beauty. Ancient civilizations, including the Greeks, believed that diamonds were divine tears and fragments of fallen stars. The legacy of diamonds in India dates back to 800 BC, where these precious gems were first discovered. Alexander the Great’s conquests introduced diamonds to Europe in 327 BC, forever cementing their place in the world’s admiration.
Diamonds have long symbolized love and commitment. In 1447, Archduke Maximilian of Austria presented Mary of Burgundy with a diamond ring as a promise of marriage, a tradition that has endured through the ages. Italians, with their belief that diamonds could harmonize relationships, sparked the practice of setting diamonds in engagement rings.
Cultivated deep within the Earth’s heart, diamonds emerge as unique, exquisite treasures, symbolizing the strength and beauty that can come from adversity.

The Extraordinary Journey Begins
Formation: Surat, located in the Indian state of Gujarat, plays a pivotal role in the diamond industry. Diamonds embark on their journey from deep within the Earth, approximately 100-200 miles below the surface. Born billions of years ago under intense heat and pressure, carbon crystals transformed into the extraordinary gems we cherish today. Volcanic activity eventually pushed these diamonds closer to the Earth’s surface through pipes. While some found their way to riverbeds and seas, the majority returned to Kimberlite pipes. Interestingly, the first diamonds were discovered as glistening pebbles near ancient river courses.
The Rigorous Mining Process
Mining diamonds is a labor-intensive and intricate process. It takes over 250 tonnes of ore to yield a single carat of rough diamond. The ore undergoes multiple stages, including blasting, crushing, and processing, to reveal the precious gems hidden within.
The Art of Sorting and Classification
Once extracted, rough diamonds undergo meticulous sorting and classification based on their unique characteristics. Shape, size, quality, and color are the key criteria. Expert sorters employ X-rays to identify and categorize these gems, ensuring that each diamond’s natural features are recognized and valued.
Diamond Cutting and Polishing
This is where diamonds truly come to life. Surat, renowned as the world’s diamond cutting and trading hub, plays a central role in this stage. Master craftsmen, armed with extraordinary precision, transform rough diamonds into dazzling embodiments of deep emotion. Through a labor-intensive process, diamonds are carefully cut to unveil their inherent brilliance. Techniques like cleaving, sawing, or laser cutting are used to create smaller, workable pieces. The bruter then grinds the stone’s edges to define its exquisite outline. Faceting follows, where 18 facets of the table, pavilion, culet, and bezel are meticulously cut and polished, followed by 40 additional facets – star facets, upper and lower girdle facets. Although much of the polishing is automated, skilled hands are still needed to bring out the diamond’s true radiance.
Manufacturing and Setting
The final, polished gem undergoes meticulous cleansing to remove impurities. It is then ready to embark on its journey into the world, where it will be transformed into exquisite pieces of jewelry. Diamonds find their way to wholesalers or are directly sold to retailers by manufacturers.
From Surat, the Diamond City, to the World
Surat, the Diamond City, is not just a hub of the diamond industry; it is where the magic truly happens. The journey of a diamond is a testament to human artistry, transforming rough, unremarkable stones into radiant symbols of elegance and sophistication. As these gems make their way from Surat to jewelry showrooms and retailers worldwide, they become more than just precious stones – they become enduring memories and tokens of joy, representing the timeless allure of nature’s most captivating gem.
